Autumn is the season Melbourne quietly keeps for itself. The summer crowds have thinned, the light turns that soft golden colour around four in the afternoon, and you can actually get a table at the places you wanted to try. If you're staying with us at Kenarim on Collins Street, you're already in the middle of it. Start Saturday morning slowly. Grab a flat white from one of the small roasters tucked behind Flinders Lane, then walk the length of Collins Street itself. The heritage arcades open around ten, and the Block Arcade is worth a proper wander even if you've seen it a dozen times. By lunch you'll want to be in Fitzroy or Carlton. The tram up Nicholson Street takes about fifteen minutes and drops you near the museum precinct. Autumn menus in Melbourne lean into root vegetables, slow-cooked lamb and anything with pumpkin, and the neighbourhood bistros do this better than almost anyone. Book ahead for Saturday lunch, even in the quieter parts of town, because autumn is when locals finally go out again. Afternoon is for the gardens. The Royal Botanic Gardens are at their best in April and May, when the elms go yellow and the air smells like damp earth. Walk the Tan track if you want something more active, or sit by the lake with a book if you don't. If the weather turns, which it will at least once, duck into the NGV on St Kilda Road. The permanent collection is free and good enough to fill three hours without trying. Evening should end near the water. Take the tram down to St Kilda, walk the pier, and watch the sun drop behind the bay. It's the kind of thing tourists do once and locals do all the time.
